Scorecard

Bangladesh claimed their first one-day international series win with a five-wicket win over Australia in the second match at Mirpur.

The hosts won their first 50-over match in 21 years against Australia in the series opener, having lost all four of their previous ODI series against the six-time World Cup winners.

Their only previous match win was in a tri-series with England in 2005, but back-to-back victories mean their first T20I series success in 2021.

Chasing a revised 192 in 41 overs after Australia’s innings was halted by rain, Bangladesh lost opener Tanjid Hasan Tamim for a wicket in the first over.

Soumya Sarkar (42) and Nazmul Hossain Shanto (41) put on a 86-run stand for the second wicket but both fell in quick succession to leave the hosts at 98-3.

However, they got over the line with six overs to spare, with Tawhid Hriday unbeaten on 40 and captain Mehdi Hasan Miraj on 22 not out.

Mehdi was hit by Nathan Ellis’ bouncer and required treatment but continued to bat despite being called for a stretcher.

Australia – who were without key players including Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood – posted 187-8 in 42 overs before the rain arrived.

They were reduced to 0-3 within two overs – only the fourth instance in 4,975 men’s ODIs that a team had lost three wickets for no runs – before stand-in captain Josh Inglis made 34.

Marnus Labuschagne added an unbeaten 55 and put on a 103-run seventh-wicket partnership with Xavier Bartlett (52), but the latter and Adam Zampa fell just before rain reduced Bangladesh’s target in DLS mode.

The final match of the three-match series will be played on Sunday at Mirpur from 06:00 PM BST.

The series could be crucial for England and qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

England is eighth, Bangladesh ninth and West Indies tenth in the International Cricket Council’s ODI rankings.

Only the top nine teams qualify directly for the World Cup in September and England face a tough challenge from India in their next ODI series in July.
