Omar Artan.. When adversity turns into the greatest gift

Omar Artan did not lose a single match on the field, did not fail the physical test, was not excluded by FIFA due to a refereeing error.

All that matters is that the dream he had been waiting for for many years ended in an office at the Miami airport.

There the Somali referee stood, carrying his passport, visa and the dreams of an entire homeland, before being told his journey to the 2026 World Cup was over before it had even begun. A few hours later, he was on a plane home, leaving behind the championship he had spent years of his life winning.

At that moment, it looked like the most beautiful success story Somali football has ever known had crashed at the border gate.

But football, as always, had another chapter.

Days after he became a symbol of deprivation and injustice in the eyes of many, Omar Artane appeared on a date with one of Europe’s biggest club nights after UEFA chose him to officiate the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria.

From the gate closed to him in the USA to the platform of honor that opened the doors of the old continent for him, 2026 saw the birth of one of the most influential human stories in the world of football.
