Somali referee Omar Artan will officiate the Super Cup following his World Cup ban.

Somali referee Omar Artan, who was barred from entering the United States to officiate at the World Cup, has been appointed to officiate the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa at the end of the season.

The match between last season’s Champions League winners PSG and Europa League winners Aston Villa is set to take place on August 12 in Salzburg.

In a statement issued by the governing body of European football, it said that the decision was reached after discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

According to UFF President Alexander Seferin, Omar Artan is an excellent young but experienced referee who has proven himself at the highest level of the Confederation of African Football.

“Football is made to bring people together, and UEFA would like to show its respect for Omar and his outstanding refereeing skills.

“I am grateful to my friend CAF President Patrice Motepe for his enthusiastic support of our initiative.”

The 2025 CAF Referee of the Year, Artan, who has been on the FIFA International Register since 2018, is set to become the first Somali referee at the World Cup finals.

However, he was turned away by border officials in Miami despite holding a diplomatic passport and a single-entry US visa.

On Wednesday, a US government official said Artan was not allowed to enter the country because of him “Communication with Suspected Members of a Terrorist Organization.”

Somalia is one of several countries on President Donald Trump’s travel ban list, and world governing body FIFA said Artan would miss the tournament after talks with US officials.
