We’ve had two nights of handball controversy involving first Bayern Munich and now Arsenal.
On both occasions, the ball deflected off her body before hitting her hand, leading fans to think this meant no penalty.
What the judges really want is a clear change in attitude. for what This is because the position of the arm does not interfere with the natural direction of the ball.
If the ball continues on its intended path, the ball that touches the hand goes first.
The penalty on Alphonso Davies on Tuesday was so close to hand to body that it would not have been awarded in the Premier League.
For Uefa, the arm leaving the body before the ball is hit constitutes the minimum deflection.
But Ben White’s handball against Atlético was clearly a penalty according to the UF definition. His arm was too far away from the body and came in to make contact with the ball.
If the arm is coming to make the body smaller, there is some decision, but in the case of white, which has already started, punishment is expected.
The Premier League is even more relaxed than Europe when it comes to isolation before handball. That said, Arsenal defender Gabriel had to concede a penalty against Newcastle earlier this season because his arm, when sliding, was too high and too far away from the body.
Will a ball off the white shin be a reason for VAR to stay out of the Premier League? Maybe, but the movement of the hand was very clear.
A definite point shot in Europe, bordering on the Premier League.
