Demand a review of immigration law
The build-up to the 2026 World Cup has seen widespread controversy over US immigration policy, following a series of incidents that sparked accusations of racial profiling and discrimination, prompting the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to demand a comprehensive review of the policy from Washington.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called on Wednesday.A comprehensive review of immigration policy, particularly in the United States of America“, warning about its negative impact on the international tournament held by the USA, Canada and Mexico.
“We have seen some of these scenes,” Turk said at a press conference held at the Commission’s headquarters in Geneva, referring to the incidents that took place in recent days, adding: “I hope that the problems of racial discrimination, surveillance and immigration enforcement will not affect the World Cup as they have already.”
Among the most prominent incidents that raised concern were the transfer of Iran’s national team from its training camp in Arizona to Mexico and the denial of entry visas to some Iranian officials. A prominent African referee of Somali origin has also been denied entry to the city of Miami, in addition to pictures showing the Senegalese player’s security check on an airport runway.
The United States hosts most of the tournament, which features 48 teams and 104 matches, in a joint arrangement with its two northern neighbors. Criticism has largely focused on immigration and border security policies implemented by federal agencies under President Donald Trump.
The international appeal comes after apparent tension in the run-up to the world’s biggest football tournament, with observers fearing such incidents will have a negative impact on the atmosphere of the competition and the image of the international tournament.
