Burnt houses and vehicles: Destruction after the Belfast protests

Houses, cars and rubbish bins were set alight during violent protests in Belfast on Tuesday evening following a knife attack on Monday.

Hadi Aloudid, a 30-year-old Sudanese man, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the attack, a man in his 40s. The victim, identified as Stephen Ogilvy, lost his left eye and sustained damage to his right eye.

Several families in Belfast have been left homeless as a result of the crisis, with a man saying his home of 13 years was destroyed by fire, which he said was “an experience I will never forget”.

Police and politicians have called for calm, with extra officers deployed across the city and public transport on the sidelines in anticipation of further unrest.
