Serena Williams: American queen’s campaign in doubt after injury to Victoria Mboko

Serena Williams’ doubles campaign at Queen’s is under threat as her partner Victoria Mboko suffered a knee injury in her singles match against Karolina Pliskova.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, 44, Returned to tennis on Tuesday After almost four years away from the game, playing doubles with Mboko.

The pair were knocked out as third seeds, but there is now uncertainty surrounding their quarter-final match after Mboko’s poor fall on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old Canadian screamed in agony as he slipped while trying to reach Pliskova’s forehand and went down on his left knee.

Mboko managed to get to her feet and return to her chair moments later, but she was visibly distraught and covered her face with a towel before retiring and leaving the court in tears.

“It’s a shame. I think we played a pretty good game and she was improving as the match went on,” said Pliskova, who was leading 6-2, 3-4.

“I just wish him the best. It’s not the way I want to win, so hopefully he’ll be good for Wimbledon.”
