Insta360’s Luna Ultra 8K camera is now available in the US

At this point, I don’t think I’d like the Luna Ultra to be my Osmo Pocket 3! A second lens with 6x lossless zoom and a wireless image stabilization is great to have, allowing me to capture my daughter’s ballet recital and my father’s wedding ceremony without leaving my seat. I can read notes at my son’s piano lesson from across the room and watch 12x differently than the DJI.

But Luna is nowhere near as difficult to use. It’s not compact and easy to handle, it’s very annoying to navigate the menu after changing any settings (you can’t just hit record to go back to recording mode), and most of all, it’s harder to tell if things are looking better on the Luna than on my DJI. I’d rather have a sharper shutter than a closed one, especially since Luna isn’t very good at choosing the right focus for itself to begin with. I can trust the Pocket 3, but the Luna needs some work.

I’m finding the Luna a little better for tracking people alone, and the 47GB of storage doesn’t mean I’ll be swearing if I leave the SD card in my PC. It’s clever how the larger grips also incorporate a small curved tripod, and I’m hoping to try some useful accessories like the neck and ear mount that rotates the camera to match the shape of your head.
