Belgium have been dealt a blow just days before the start of the World Cup after Manchester City star Jeremy Doku was injured in group training in preparation for their opening game against Egypt.
Belgium, who are in Group G with Egypt, Iran and New Zealand, are set to open their matches against Egypt next Monday, June 15, with the Red Devils looking to get off to a strong start.
As reported by the Belgian newspaper HLN, Doku felt pain during the team’s first training session in the American city of Seattle, after the delegation arrived to participate in the tournament.
All players took part in training, except for defender Zeno Debast, who continued his treatment program before the session was dealt a further blow when Doku withdrew with muscle discomfort less than an hour after kick-off.
The newspaper clarified that the player had left the pitch to receive treatment amid concern within the technical staff, before Belgium received initial assurances that the injury was not serious.
The report adds that expectations suggest the injury is a minor concern, with the player likely to return to group training in the coming hours, easing doubts over his absence from the Egypt game.
