A major dilemma despite the leader’s flexibility
Liverpool could face another major managerial change as they begin their new era under manager Andoni Iraola.
Turmoil grew at Liverpool last season, with a steep drop in the team’s form which saw them lose the Premier League title and finish the season in fifth place, but they qualified for the Champions League.
Amid the controversy surrounding the departure of Mohamed Salah and the treatment of coach Arne Slott in the dressing room, the administration suddenly decided to sack the Dutch coach and replace him with Spanish Iraola.
Al-Hilal’s resilience and the Reds’ dilemma
According to the statement of the famous Belgian journalist Sacha Tavoleri, the current sporting director of “Liverpool” Richard Hughes is conducting in-depth negotiations with Saudi Arabian officials to take over the position of the new sporting director of the “Al Hilal” club.
He noted that the plan announced by the Saudi side does not include Hughes’ immediate resignation from his duties at Liverpool. Instead, Al Hilal are willing to allow the Scottish sporting director to work on Liverpool’s upcoming transfer window before making any further moves.
This sounds logical in theory, but in reality it creates a dilemma for the Reds as it creates a state of uncertainty at a time when Liverpool need more clarity to quietly sort out their cards ahead of the start of the season to rectify the situation.

A key figure in the Iraola Project
Hughes has already played an important role in Liverpool’s recent rebuilding process. He played a major role in Iraola’s appointment, having previously worked with him at Bournemouth. This relationship was believed to be one of the reasons that prompted Liverpool to move quickly and confidently with the Spanish manager after the departure of Arne Slott.
Therefore, losing Hughes soon after he was appointed (early last season) would not be ideal. Iraola needs a sporting director who understands his style of play, his personality and the type of players he needs to make his plan successful. Liverpool are expected to be active this summer with the opportunity to strengthen the defensive line, add players to the midfield and make changes in attack. This is what makes the role of the sports director important.
