The London and New York productions of Stranger Things: The First Shadowpremiere of the Netflix TV blockbuster, both closed for the winter. The spectacular piece went on to run for three years in the West End, where it won two Olivier awards, and for more than 20 months on Broadway, where it won four Tony awards. The final performance at the Phoenix Theater in London will be on 27 December and the final performance at the Marquis Theater in New York will be on 3 January.
The announcement, which was made on Tuesday, comes as a surprise considering the TV series’ continued success. The November launch of the fifth and final season broke the screen for the English-language series on Netflix, with 59.6m views in the first five days, and caused the streaming service to crash within minutes of its launch. In February, it was reported that the New York scene was being filmed for a later release, but Netflix has yet to confirm this.
More than 1.5m tickets have been sold in the West End and Broadway. Brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, producers and producers of the Strange Thingssaid that when theater director Stephen Daldry first presented the idea of a play to them “we were surprised – both because Stephen wanted to do this, and that he believed it could work. And, boy, it worked. We are still amazed by what Stephen, (writer) Kate Trefry, (co-director) Justin Martin and all the geniuses behind the witch.
The creator Sonia Friedman He said: “We are very proud of the ambition, talent and skill that every member of the company has put into creating something so impressive.” Together they have crossed the boundaries of the theater to tell this story from the heart, with joy and drama.” Both Friedman and the Duffer Brothers noted that the show gave the show its first exposure to a large audience.
The show’s website indicates that there is moderate to good availability for almost all future performances, including cheap tickets.
TV stars include Sadie Sink, who made her West End debut this year in Romeo and Juliet (who it lasts until 20 June), and Gaten Matarazzo, who will be making his West End debut the Rent song these shoots.
