It’s night reader. I usually read in the dark with mine e-reader of choice in its black mode (if you don’t know it, it’s a mode that turns the background black and all the text and lines white, making it smaller but easier to read). This allows my husband and almost 4 year old son to sneak up on me and read, without the light on my device.
It is not surprising that, as a reader of such a night, the lack of darkness on Kindle Colorsoft or Kindle Scribe Colorsoft it was a big complaint for me. Yes, you can turn the color of the black page on books (but not on exported documents, including AZW3, which is designed specifically for reading on Amazon devices), but the page bars and the start pages make me squint in the dark room if I want to change the book I’m reading or use the menu interface. He was one of many which we found missing in Kindle Colorsoftbut it is the one that prevents me from using it more than anyone else Kindle. I’d be holding my Kindle Paperwhite knowing I wouldn’t be blindsided at 11:45 pm.
That all changes today. Amazon has announced that dark mode is rolling out to Colorsoft Kindle devices today and will continue in the coming weeks. It will also include a toggle option, if you don’t want everything on your Colorsoft Kindle to be dark when you use this option. If the dark background has prevented you from accessing Colorsoft, you can remove it from your list of problems.

If you’re a Kindle Colorsoft owner, you can start checking your device today for updates, but it might not show up right away. If you don’t want to wait, you can download it order here from Amazonbut you need to install it on your computer and follow these instructions manually update your Kindle.
Colorsoft’s black version will also give you options. You can choose to darken the screen while leaving the rest of the screen clear. This seems to have been specially designed Kindle Scribe Colorsoftand digital book Kindle color mode, so you can choose to leave your digital documents in a light mode while you have the home screen and books in dark mode. But it will work on all Colorsoft tools (and so far, only Colorsoft tools, but we’ll see if this changes over time). Amazon says you can access this by clicking on the black icon in the Quick Actions menu, and you’ll be able to change the black icon from there.
Amazon has also guaranteed that any colors you’ve used on your Colorsoft Kindle Scribe notebooks or highlights you’ve used to annotate your ebook on any Colorsoft device will remain the same color when the device goes dark.
If you’re ready to own a Kindle Colorsoft now that dark is here, here’s a quick look at the lineup.
