As speculation continues over the future of Argentine Julian Alvarez and a possible move to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid have begun to move behind the scenes in anticipation of a possible departure for their first-choice striker in the summer transfer window.
According to Catalan publication Sport, Atletico Madrid management have already inquired about signing Nigerian Victor Osihen, reflecting the club’s concern over losing Alvarez in the coming weeks.
The newspaper notes that Alvarez’s transfer deal to “Barcelona” has not yet been completed, although the first offer presented by the Catalan club by “Atletico” Madrid was rejected. The player has also informed his club’s management of his desire to wear the Barcelona shirt, while insisting that there will be no public pressure to leave.
In light of the uncertainty surrounding the Argentine forward’s future, Atletico Madrid realize they may have to move quickly for a first-class replacement if they receive a suitable offer and the player is sold.
Osihen’s name stands out as one of the strongest options on the market, after the Nigerian striker has continued to prove his goalscoring abilities in recent seasons, becoming a target for many of Europe’s top clubs.
But it won’t be an easy task for Atletico, with Sport confirming that Galatasaray’s high financial demands are a major obstacle to completing the deal, especially in light of the expected competition for the player’s services.
Atletico Madrid’s need for a new striker is growing as the departure of more than one influential attacking figure looms, with Antoine Griezmann already out, while talks continue over Alexandre Sorlot’s move to Juventus.
Accordingly, the departure of Julián Alvarez may force the Madrid club management to conclude a major attacking deal that will make Victor Osihen’s name on the Rojiblancos chart in the coming period.
Alvarez’s future remains the deciding factor in shaping the characteristics of Atletico Madrid’s attack in the new season, amid high expectations of the outcome of negotiations after the end of the World Cup.
