Louis Biele-Bierre: France winger considering sevens switch for LA 2028

Fifteen-a-side sensation Louis Biele-Bierre is exploring the possibility of representing France as they defend their seventh Olympic crown at Los Angeles 2028.

The 22-year-old has scored 29 tries in 27 games for France in fifteen years, including a record nine in this season’s Six Nations.

Scrum-half Antoine Dupont skipped the Six Nations in preparation for the Paris Olympics in 2024, before helping the host nation to its first gold medal of the Games before making a surprise format change.

French media report that Bielle-Biarrey has spoken to his club side Bordeaux Beagles about a release for seven games on a condition of a contract extension.

“I have learned of his desire to play sevens and I am very happy,” said French Rugby Federation president Florian Grill. told L’Equipe., outsider

Grill supported Biel-Bierre that DuPont would have a similar effect if he switched.

“Yes, it seems pretty obvious,” he said. “Louis will certainly be an excellent rugby sevens player.”

Swapping between formats is relatively common in the women’s game.

Meg Jones and Ellie Kildoon, who will later star in the England team that won the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2025, were part of the Great Britain Sevens team that finished seventh at the Paris Games, while Ilona Maher of the Bristol Bears won bronze with Team USA – and the social media following.

The All Blacks’ Sonny Bill Williams and Rico Ioane both represented New Zealand at the Olympics, while South Africa’s double Rugby World Cup winners Cheslin Kolbe and Quagga Smith played each other at Rio 2016.

Semi Radradra (Fiji) and Samu Kerevi (Australia) have also played at the Olympics, while legendary All Black duo Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen both made their breakthrough at the Hong Kong Sevens.
