Stephen Welsh: Swansea City ready to sign Celtic defender

Celtic defender Stephen Welsh is set to become Swansea City’s first signing of the summer.

Welsh, 26, came through Celtic’s youth team and made 70 appearances for the Glasgow giants.

He spent most of the 2025–26 season on loan at Motherwell, making 31 appearances for Celtic’s Scottish Premiership rivals.

He had a loan spell at Belgian side Mechelen the previous campaign, while he also had a temporary spell with Morton in the early stages of his senior career.

Swansea head coach Vitor Matos is keen to strengthen his central defensive options.

Ben Kabango and Cameron Burgess were the mainstays of the Swansea rearguard last season, with Ricardo Santos a marginal figure and Kelan Casey not being replaced after his season-long loan from West Ham was cut short in January.
