No further details were released on how the sale was completed
Today, Monday, a press release revealed a big surprise hours after the announcement Florentino Perez wins, leading “Real” Madrid.for a new term, extending until 2030, ahead of his rival Enrique Riquelme.
“Marca” newspaper reported that Florentino Perez will announce today that a part of the club has been put up for sale, which requires the prior consent of the club members in a referendum. In other words, Peres will once again submit to the will of the voters, knowing that more than 30% of the members rejected him yesterday, voting in favor of his rival.
Apart from confirming his intention to sell his interest in the club, Florentino Pérez did not reveal further details about how the sale would be completed, who it would be sold to, the percentage that would be allocated or the institutional model he would propose for the referendum.
However, he stressed the need for reform to ensure the club remains owned by its members.
At a general assembly meeting last November, Florentino announced his plan to hold a referendum, but without elaborating. “We will remain a members’ club, but we have to create a subsidiary where Real Madrid’s 100,000 members retain absolute control,” he said. “On this basis, this subsidiary may simply include a minority stake, say 5%, from one or more investors who are committed to the long term and are willing to invest their own resources.”
Since November, and despite direct attacks from Enrique Riquelme, Florentino Perez has not revealed many details about the sale of the club’s interest, the conversion of members to owners or shareholders, nor the formula that will be chosen for institutional changes.
Peres recently said: “I will give 100,000 club members economic ownership. Belonging to Real Madrid will not only be an emotional feeling, it will mean owning the club for life. Those who buy 5% of the shares of Real Madrid will not be responsible, but will be associated with a brand like ours.”
Despite opportunities during the pre-election campaign to explain this troubling aspect to the members, Florentino avoided entering into the discussion, which he must now address in detail.
What percentage of votes does Florentino need in that referendum? The club charter states: “Taking into account the objectives pursued by the Real Madrid Football Club and its legal nature, its transformation, merger or dissolution will only take place with the approval of an absolute majority of members entitled to vote for that purpose in a referendum called by an extraordinary General Assembly.”
Florentino Perez has to explain in detail how to sell a part of Real Madrid, and the final decision on the fate of that part once again rests with the members.
