After a few months, the award-winning revival of Evita will be transferred Broadway in the spring of 2027.
The West End run starred Rachel Zegler in the lead role, winning an Olivier award, and will be followed by a revival in New York. Tim Rice’s new success with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s story of activist and actress Eva Perón is directed by Jamie Lloyd, who previously won a Tony for the revival of Sunset Boulevard.
Evita was last performed on Broadway in 2012 starring Elena Roger and Ricky Martin.
“To do Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic show in London was a dream come true, but being able to reunite with Jamie to bring Evita to Broadway is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Zegler said in a statement.
Lloyd said he was “overwhelmed” by the response in London but would work to rebuild Broadway. “When we started talking about New York, it became clear that our Palladium song Don’t Cry For Me Argentina was not going to be possible,” he said. “I’m very excited to explore a new concept, made especially for Broadway.”
Evita made headlines in London for her unique and divisive performance of Zegler’s Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. on the porch to passers-by. The Guardian’s Mark Lawson to be mentioned for it as a “gimmick” that gave those who bought expensive tickets to see the show.
In an interview last monthLloyd cited safety concerns as a reason not to adopt this practice in New York. “One thing that will never happen is what we did in London on the balcony,” he said. “We can’t do that in New York, I mean, terrible things can happen because we have gun laws in Britain.”
In three stars commentsArifa Akbar of the Guardian called Zegler’s performance “extraordinary” but criticized the show’s bombast and lack of intelligence.
Zegler’s major credits include West Side Story and Snow White and she made her Broadway debut in 2024. Romeo + Juliet.
Evita joins other shows already announced for Broadway in 2027 such as The Full Monty, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and David Hare’s. Montauk and Laura Linney.
