British Open Squash: Amina Orfi and Paul Call win titles

Teenager Amina Orfi broke a 94-year-old squash record to become the youngest British Open women’s champion with a 3-1 win over Noor Elsherbini in Birmingham.

The 18-year-old Egyptian blew away his compatriot 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 to go 1-0 up.

And in doing so, she beat the record held by Susan Noel, who was 19 years and eight months old when she won the British Open title in 1932.

Orfeo beat world number two Elsherbini last month to become the youngest women’s world champion.

And Sunday’s win at the Rep Theater came a day after she battled top seed and world number one Hania El Hammami in the longest women’s match in British Open history – and the joint fourth-longest ever – in a 110-minute marathon.

“I feel very happy with these two results in back-to-back world champions,” he said. “I was very tired and it was a great match.”

New Zealand’s Paul Cole won the men’s title – his third British Open crown – with a 3-1 victory over Egypt’s Mustafa Assal.

The world number one Asal endured a 115-minute match against Peru’s Diego Elias in a similarly epic semi-final on Saturday.

And it appeared to take a physical toll on the world champion as he conceded the match early in the fourth game.

“Mustafa had a brutal yesterday, but today I had to get him, hit him, pick up as much as I could and I’m very happy with that performance,” Call said after collecting his 33rd PSA Tour title.

The final PSA Squash Tour event of the season is the PSA Squash Tour Finals in Paris from 17 to 20 June.
