Robin van Persie was sacked by Feyenoord after just 16 months in charge


Feyenoord have sacked manager Robin van Persie after just 16 months in charge of the Eredivisie club.

Former striker of Arsenal and Manchester United Helped the club to second place And qualified for the Champions League in his only full season as manager, although they finished 19 points behind winners PSV Eindhoven.

Davy Riggs, 42, left just two weeks after being appointed technical director and Robert Inhorn as general manager.

“Robin van Persie has given everything for the club in the last 1.5 years. He certainly deserves credit for ending a difficult season with a final second place finish. It’s definitely Champions League football, which is of course very important,” said Riggs.

“We conducted a thorough internal analysis. In this, we considered, among other things, the development of playing style and the downward trend in terms of total points in both Europe and the Eredivisie.

“The conclusion was that it’s better to start next season with a new head coach.”

Van Persie had two spells as a player at Feyenoord at the start and end of his career, scoring 46 goals in 122 appearances for the Rotterdam club.

After retirement he became an assistant coach under Dick Advocate and worked with their youth team.

He left in May 2024 to take charge of Heerenveen but returned to Feyenoord nine months later.

The former striker spent eight years at Arsenal from 2004 and helped them win the FA Cup before joining Manchester United in 2012 where he won the Premier League in his first season at the club.
