England vs New Zealand: Josh Tongue is now the main bowler for the hosts – Jonathan Agnew

Despite what happened during the Ashes, England’s win in this first Test against New Zealand was so important – and they won it emphatically.

It was a very tough pitch at Lord’s but it was the same for both sides, and they came out on top.

Talking to head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, I think they felt a lot of relief. It’s been a tough time for all of them since the Ashes. Sitting for a long time thinking and brooding.

So to come and win the first game and to do it in good style, that was the most important thing for them.

What does it tell us? Not a huge amount. We know Ollie Robinson is a really good bowler. We always know it.

But there’s a lot on his shoulders, a lot of talk about him and his fitness, attitude and all that stuff.

He has been thrown a lot in the last two years, so there is a lot of pressure on him. McCullum said he noted that he was more nervous than his debut.

To come back and take three wickets in your first over, it’s a dream come true. He will have a more challenging day but that’s the way he bowls and that’s the kind of consistency that England missed from their first attack in the Ashes.

I like this seam bowling attack overall. It’s got more control.

Robinson and Gus Atkinson both took five wickets during the match and are very efficient operators.

Although England’s main bowler at the moment is Josh Tong. I have no doubt about it.

His development is remarkable. From where he releases the ball is made of shields for Lords. It’s a very high action and he can hold onto the pavilion end at times, as he did to great effect.

He goes above and beyond what he promises. He is becoming reliable now and England need to keep him fit.
