Florentino Perez is taking part in Real Madrid’s presidential election today, Sunday, as the most likely candidate to retain his position and lead the club until 2030.
But this time he faces his first real electoral challenge in nearly two decades in the form of young businessman Enrique Riquelme, who has managed to establish himself as a serious challenger after Perez dominated the Madrid scene for years.
Around 95,000 voting members are invited to vote at Real Madrid City’s basketball hall in Valdebebas between 9am and 8pm local time in a one-day voting process that will decide the club’s future until 2030.
Since returning to the club’s presidency in 2009, Perez has won unopposed in every election (2009, 2013, 2017, 2021, 2025), making Riquelme’s appearance today an exceptional event that returns the ballot box to the heart of Madrid’s two monopoly houses.
While most polls favor the incumbent, some indicators have shown the margin narrowing in the final days of the campaign, leaving the door open for a shock surprise.
