Highlights of the Super League clash between Catalan Dragons and Wigan Warriors

Wigan Warriors turned in one of their best performances of the season as they beat the Catalan Dragons 40-16 in a historic Super League match in Paris on Saturday.

Jean Boin’s match at the Stade was held to celebrate the Catalans’ 20 years in the Super League, but Wigan – a week after their Challenge Cup final success against Hull KR at Wembley – were much improved.

Jay Field, Junior Nsemba, George Marsden, Jack Farrimond, Jake Wardle, Jack Eckersley and Adam Keighran all scored tries for Wigan, with 17-year-old Marsden’s effort a try-of-the-season contender.

The Catalans scored three tries through Solomona Fatape, Jack Lipovic and Chris Satay, but the latter also managed to redeem himself on the half-hour for giving away a deliberate penalty after disagreeing with a knock-on call against him, also using the Dragons’ only captain’s challenge to do so.

Wigan made the hay against 12 players, scoring three tries for a half-time lead of 30-6 to seven off the park. From there, there was no going back for the Catalans on what should have proved a day of great celebration.

Nasemba: You could say I’m in the form of my career

Sky Sports’ Nsemba Man of the Match:

“It’s amazing, it’s great to play with the group.

“We wanted to back up last week (Challenge Cup final win) and not be an ODI team. We did that today.

“In previous years, we were pretty bad the week after winning the Challenge Cup.

“Yes you can say that (his career form). I have to keep doing what I am doing, listen to the coaches and I am still young so I have time to reach my peak.

“All I know is carry and tackle, so if I can get a bit of passing into my game it will add to that.”

Wigan head coach Matt Peat from Sky Sports:

“Very happy with it. We knew it was a tough game, after Wembley and France.

“I would have taken a one-point win, so it’s very pleasing to win in this manner.

“You know what teams will say about you coming out of Wembley. The Catalans are a very proud team and so the start was very important.

“We had to match their physicality and good kicking.

“It brought some uncertainty around today’s game, with our inexperienced halves coming into a match like this.

“They (Marsden, Farimond) handled it very well and both defended hard. I’m proud of them and it’s a great reflection on the club.”

Cartwright: I’ll learn a lot from today – ‘our own worst enemy’

Catalan Dragons head coach John Cartwright:

“After today I will learn a bit about the team.

“Coaches have been saying all year there are times in the game where we give up big chunks of points.

“It was almost a carbon-copy today.

Chris Satai came off the bench to block the ball, give away a penalty for deliberately using the captain’s challenge and then was sin-binned.

“We were our own worst enemy in the first half. We came back 12-6 and it was drama from then on, three tries in a 10-minute period (sin-bin Sata).

“Wigan are a great team. They held us and came out with momentum. That’s what we need to do.

“You don’t beat a lot of teams like we played today.”
