Even before the Trump administration began fighting DEI and trying to combat mass discrimination, various efforts in the US were controversial. The important time came in 2023, right The Supreme Court decided this that race-based programs violate the constitution. The decision was based on the failure of universities to properly evaluate the benefits of various student organizations and the lack of standards to determine when the benefits have been achieved and when the programs have ended.
A new paper sheds light on the uncertainty. “Education theory argues that racial diversity promotes student learning, which should increase wages,” its authors wrote. “However, well-known tax discrimination suggests that racial disparities should reduce wages.”
But the authors—Debanjan Mitra, Peter Golder, and Mariya Topchy—have developed a way to show that graduates benefit financially if they graduate with a diverse peer group. The researchers say this evidence should be enough for the courts to reconsider previous decisions.
Conducting this type of research is difficult, mainly because there are no clear metrics. Results also vary widely based on school type, starting diversity, and financial status at graduation, which can mask potential benefits. So while some studies have shown benefits for different groups, the evidence remains limited.
A new paper addresses these challenges by narrowing and expanding its focus. It narrows down the analysis of business and law schools, following one result: starting salary. At the same time, the researchers expand the study, using decades from about 350 schools, including about 3,000 business schools and more from law schools, which have taken 20 years to graduate.
That doesn’t include everyone who graduates, usually about 75 percent of each class. But Mitra, Golder, and Topchy examine diversity by analyzing student achievement and examining the diversity of classes accepted at the school.
