Leo, the first American leader of the global Catholic Church, told reporters on his flight from Rome to Madrid on Saturday that he would support Team America at the World Cup.

“I will definitely support the United States,” the Pope said. “I don’t know how many matches I will be able to watch, but I wish them all the best.”
Leo, who hails from the south suburbs of Chicago, worked as a missionary and bishop in Peru for decades before becoming pope.
He said in a press interview last year that he would support Peru against the United States in any match between the two teams. But Peru did not participate in the 2026 World Cup.
The Pope, who is on a week-long tour of Spain and the Canary Islands, revealed his preference between two Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona on Saturday.
When another reporter asked him which team he supported, Leo, who was called Cardinal Robert Prevost (his real name), was silent for a moment before saying,
