Benn Jordan may have first become famous for his music Flashlight and later, reviewing synths and effects streaming on YouTube under Benn and Gear. But about five years ago, Benn decided to get his own YouTube video other side. He didn’t stop covering musical instruments overnight, but over time, his approach became more focused on scientific and technological research. He also turned the entire business into a non-profit.
Although there will still be the occasional video about music or audio – say, destroy the music AI systems or save data in birdsong – Recently Benn has been focusing on the lighting scene. They uncovered glaring security flaws inside Flock’s camera systems, showed how easy it is to hack a Camera beepingand it seems that he confirmed the conspiracy theory that Unitree’s robot dogs they are undercover sending data to Chinese servers.
In short, Benn Jordan has gone from one of the best music YouTubers to one of the best cybersecurity YouTubers. He was kind enough to take the time to confirm all of our fears about government and corporate oversight, to answer our weekly questions.
What’s the first app you install on a new phone or computer? (Not counting pre-installed apps like Gmail)
On a new Windows PC, Ninite. Which is like you give me one wish and I want more. Ninite is a free utility that quickly compiles a list of things you’ll spend the next few hours installing on a new PC.
What’s one thing you’d like to change about your phone?
That it was easily unlockable and rootable.
What’s your favorite place on the internet?
Strudel.cc. It’s a 100 percent free, powerful, and popular music language that runs in the browser. It’s a great way to procrastinate and even accidentally learn to code.
What’s your favorite piece of equipment you’ve owned?
The original Pebble Watch. It didn’t harvest my data or track anything. It told me the time and date, it told me when I had a new message, and it lasted a week on one price. Which happens to be the only three things I crave from a watch.
What was the biggest disappointment?
Amazon Echo Show (3rd edition). I only bought one to try it out, but it’s a neat and tidy device that exists to spy on you, show you ads, and ask you to pay for pre-advertised content.
What creation are you most proud of?
At least on YouTube (which is probably what got me into random questions On the edge): In 2022, the imposter pretends Rolling StoneAndy Greene reached out to me on Instagram, saying he wanted to record my music. Knowing the real Andy Greene, I decided to follow the scam as closely as possible and tell Andy the story.
I thought it was going to be a video where I would rob a con man, but it turned out to be a video about oppression in West Africa, Set the conditionand one time I was drinking my own blood during a WhatsApp call with a Ghanaian doctor when we were in Chili with my friend’s family.
The video didn’t get a lot of views, but it all defined the way my movement is now.
What is your passion?
Spectrometry and interferometry. Mainly related to the use of invisible modulation of invisible waves to pick up and download sound.
When was the last time you went somewhere without your phone?
I try to do this every day!
What do you think should be confusing?
Three times. It’s hard to imagine what would justify the huge price difference between a midrange tripod on Amazon and something like Sachtler. It turns out that it’s very acceptable and, over a decade, it’s probably a lot cheaper than all the intermediates you’re replacing or upgrading a little to and fro.
What would be the tagline of your biopic?
“If Jon Hamm could be sold on Term.”
What was the last GIF or meme you used?
I don’t know if this is a meme, but I always use a picture of a triangle with luck in each corner, but you can have two at the same time.
