Newcastle have signed a historic deal from France

Promising Reims goalkeeper Eoin Gawn is set to travel to England’s Newcastle United on Monday to complete the transfer process after a final deal was reached between the two clubs yesterday, Friday.

According to sources close to the deal, the transfer fee was 28.5 million euros, making it the most expensive ever in the history of the French second division, a deal that reflects the exceptional potential of the young goalkeeper.

Reims continue to break their record in the transfer market despite not dominating the league this season, as the club now occupy the top three places for the most expensive deals in the competition.

The club pocketed €25m last summer from midfielder Valentin Atangana’s move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahly, before repeating the same feat in January last year by signing a similar deal with Paris FC to include Ivorian midfielder Patrick Zab, who will join the capital at the start of next season.

These successive deals confirm the success of Reims management’s investment policy in identifying and developing talent before selling them in record numbers, strengthening the club’s financial position and opening new horizons in the competition for French second-tier clubs to attract rising stars.
