After falling on the threshold of a dream for many years, the Asian team takes its place among the big boys.
After decades of anticipation and painful disappointments, the Uzbekistan national team is set to write the most important chapter in its football history when it competes in the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico, marking its first World Cup since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
The qualification of Uzbekistan, nicknamed the White Wolves, was not only the result of bringing the number of participating teams to 48, but also followed a strong selection campaign that confirmed that the Asian team now deserves its place among the best teams in the world. They finished the qualifiers narrowly beaten by Iran, while their only defeat in 16 games came at home to Qatar.
