Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has been hospitalized and will not qualify for the Monaco Grand Prix.
Vasseur was at the track on Friday with Ferrari going one-two in both practice sessions but the team released a statement on Saturday ahead of final practice saying he remains under observation near Monaco.
The 58-year-old has been Ferrari team principal since the start of 2023.
“Fred Vasseur will not be present at the circuit today. After some medical checks, Fred will be under observation at a local medical facility,” Ferrari said.
“No further medical information will be released. We wish Fred a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the track soon.”
Vasseur spoke to the media on Friday after Lewis Hamilton topped team-mate Charles Leclerc in second practice and was seen walking off the track in the evening.
Ferrari are favorites for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix as their car is unique to the Monte Carlo track layout and is suited to slow and medium speed corners.
“We have a job to do. It’s a long way from Friday to qualifying and the race,” Vasseur said.
“The hardest (thing) is that you have to anticipate the evolution of the track, the grip. You always have to be ahead in a session and that’s a challenge for the team and the drivers. We’ll see the real pace on Saturday afternoon.”
Ferrari has not won a grand prix since October 2024 and Hamilton is seeking his first victory since joining the Scuderia.
“It was a positive day overall and the car felt pretty good from the first lap,” Hamilton said.
“The team did a solid job with the changes we made between the two sessions and we were able to work through our program without any major issues.
“Monaco is always a very different challenge, being close to the barriers, so it’s not easy to find the right balance and put everything together. There’s still performance to be had and tonight we’ll focus on the details, because the margin here is very small and there’s a lot of work to do before qualifying.”
