Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wants everyone to know: “We are Xbox.” Only last week, he left Microsoft Gaming as the name of Microsoft’s gaming division in favor of Xbox only. Now, to reinforce the message, Xbox sources tell me that all Xbox employees are getting an @xbox.com email address next month.
The new Xbox email address will replace the existing @microsoft.com address as the default for sending new email, and employees will be able to opt out and keep their Microsoft email address as the default sending address instead. Mojang employees will also be assigned a @mojang.com email address, and both Xbox and Mojang employees will retain their @microsoft.com email addresses.
The change is being made as part of “strengthening the Xbox brand inside and outside of Microsoft,” according to an internal Xbox memo, seen by Seaside. It’s a bit of a change, but Activision and Bethesda staff still use their email addresses so this will help the Xbox team have the same email experience as their colleagues and developers.
Some Xbox users may have obtained @xbox.com email addresses in the past, by requesting one from Microsoft’s IT department. But this is the first time that Microsoft has pushed these Xbox emails to all of its gaming partners.
Email updates are part of the update process “We are Xbox” effort. In a press conference with Xbox CEO Matt Booty, Sharma and Booty outlined their vision for the future of Xbox last week. The memo mentioned the end of the Microsoft Games name, and how Xbox will judge its success on the players who are active every day and what they need in terms of hardware, content, experiences, and services.
