Title Favorite Alexander Zverev held his nerve to defeat Jakub Mencic in the French Open semi-finals, one point away from a heroic Grand Slam record.
The second seed reached his fourth major final and second at Roland Garros, losing to Carlos Alcaraz in five games in 2024.
Zverev, who advanced to the fourth seed for only the second time in the tournament, managed to settle down to beat first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist and 26th seed Mencic 7-5 6-2 3-6 6-3.
Zverev, the front-runner to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires after shock exits from world number one Janic Ciner and Novak Djokovic in the opening week, will face either 10th seeds Flavio Cobolli or Matteo Arnaldi in Sunday’s final.
If the 29-year-old wins, he will become the seventh oldest to win the first Grand Slam men’s singles title since Michael Stich won Wimbledon in 1991.
