Türkiye v Northern Ireland: Will club momentum boost NI’s World Cup hopes?

Northern Ireland come into this window on the back of two positive results against Malta in April.

However, several players involved in the title will live long in the memory, the team will have more faith.

Rebecca McKenna, Rebecca Holloway and Simone Magill, who missed most of the season during pregnancy but won promotion to the Women’s Super League (WSL) with Birmingham City after the birth, while Ellie Mason was part of the Charlton Athletic squad that won the play-off to book a place in the WSL.

At Hearts, Joely Andrews, Lauren Wade and Kerry Halliday, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Motherwell, won the Scottish Premiership title for the first time in the club’s history.

Burnley Women’s were promoted to Super League 2 after finishing the league season unbeaten with Brenna McPartlan, Danielle Maxwell and Louise McDaniel picking up winners’ medals.

A number of Northern Ireland players have also enjoyed recent success. Nadene Caldwell, Aimee Kerr and Mia Moore were all part of the Glentoran squad that lifted the Women’s Premiership trophy last season and recently began their title defence.

McArdle believes the squad’s success at club level can have a positive impact when they pull on the green shirt for Northern Ireland.

“We’ve got some very confident players coming into camp with their accomplishments throughout the season. So, it’s great for them personally,” McArdle said.

“For some players, that promotion to the WSL or WSL2 or wherever they go on their own journey… it might be great for them at the time. For others, it might not be what they need.

“So, it’s really just personal context. But of course, having those players come into high camp, it will be great for us.”
