Kieran Morrison: Liverpool teenager ‘buzzing’ after Northern Ireland debut

Throughout his young career to date, Kieran Morrison has taken a phone call from his father after every game.

It was no different as he made his senior Northern Ireland debut against Guinea on Thursday.

Standing on the pitch in the sun at La Linea, in the shadow of the Rock of Gibraltar, he spoke about his first 45 minutes with his father in a green shirt.

“He was telling me what I could have done better and what I could have done better,” said a proud Morrison.

“He does it every game. He’s my coach and has been since I was four years old.

“After every game he calls me until I answer. I’m happy to have such a person in my corner, sometimes it’s to criticize me and other times it’s to offer praise.”

Morrison was called up to Michael O’Neill’s senior squad for the World Cup play-off with Italy in March, despite Liverpool’s only two senior appearances under the now-departed Arne Slott, in the EFL Cup and FA Cup.

He did not feature in Bergamo or the subsequent friendly with Wales, but he featured in Spain’s 1–0 win over Guinea.

“I didn’t expect to hear that at the start of the season,” he said of what seemed to be the Northern Ireland international.

“I’m very proud and my family is very proud. I’m buzzing.”
