Celtic supporter groups support statement against the appointment of Robbie Keane

A number of Celtic supporters’ clubs have come out against the appointment of Robbie Keane as manager due to the Irishman’s role as head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Latest reports, External Keane, 45, spoke to Scottish Championship shareholder Dermot Desmond.

The Republic of Ireland’s record goalscorer has won league titles as manager in Israel and Hungary.

However, his decision to stay in Israel after the start of the conflict in Gaza drew criticism in his home country and turned a section of Celtic fans against him.

A statement from a group calling itself Celtic Supporters for the Liberation of Palestine said Kane’s appointment “is deeply divided among the support”, and now the North Curve Celtic account on X has published the names of 67 groups.

The list includes Green Brigade ultras, a selection of podcasts and long established groups including Glasgow University Celtic Supporters Club and Craignock Tommy Gemmell CSC.

“For us, Robbie Keane’s decision to manage Maccabi Tel Aviv during the genocide in Gaza cannot be ignored,” the statement said.

“Celtic was founded in a society shaped by the legacy of genocide, displacement and famine.

“The basis of our club is solidarity with those who have been wronged and wronged. We cannot forget where we came from and we cannot turn our backs on those who are facing genocide today.”
