England vs New Zealand: Ollie Robinson rediscovers ‘love of the game’ to restore dreams

In the year When Robinson was dropped from the England team following the 2024 tour of India, he had an impressive bowling average of 22.92.

However, his concerns about both his physicality and attitude were outweighed by his obvious talent as a rookie ballplayer.

A 27-month absence from international cricket followed before the county’s season got off to a good start, allowing him to be recalled after taking charge of Sussex.

“I don’t think I’m a different bowler,” added Robinson.

“I’m not there yet – there’s still a lot of hard work to do and put in, but as people have said, I don’t think my ability will ever be in doubt. It’s more about fitness and other things.

“When I got the call from (Rob Key, managing director of England men’s cricket) and (head coach Brendon McCullum), I knew I had a lot of work to do.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to do for the past few months. And like I said, I’m by no means the finished article.

“But it’s sessions like this that are there that definitely make it all worthwhile.”

New Zealand continue day two on 61-6, still trailing England on 79, with a determined Robinson set to lead the charge as the hosts look to secure a healthy first-innings lead.

“Stokesi said to me last week, ‘I’m glad to have you back, but you still have to work hard,’ and that’s what’s going through my head right now,” Robinson said.

“These days it’s what you play for. But, like I said, I still have a lot of work to do, and it’s great to be back here in the England shirt.”
