Zoë Schiffer: Deviance and freaks, the new name of our podcast. And this, I mean, just going back to the red team, that’s the job that the trust and security team does. And those teams—
Leah Feiger: We don’t have that anymore.
Zoë Schiffer: They are not as big as they used to be. There is not much work like this. So yeah, I mean, it’s going to be interesting to see how that goes. Of course within Meta, we’ve been talking to people this week who have had issues with SI. The company has just laid off many workers. We have written about it. We have talked about it. And I looked at people being like, “Okay, how’s it going now?” Hacking was like an excuse to talk to people, see how they were doing. And they’re like, “I mean, as you would expect, we’re being asked to do two jobs now instead of going forward.” So you can imagine how it plays out.
Brian Barrett: I, too, we were talking about AI laws before and emphasized all this on national security and high level things, but again, not so much on consumers facing products, which would be if you had some kind of office that managed the money of consumers and protect that, that it would be useful to have them in this moment as well. We had one of those. Technically, I think we still do, not really. So all these removals are coming at a time when the existing equipment is not available. These new tools are very wrong. We will see more about this.
Leah Feiger: Can I bring us to a topic that has nothing to do with AI, guys?
Brian Barrett: Please.
Zoë Schiffer: Oh. I didn’t know she existed, but yes, go away, queen.
Brian Barrett: Also, I think maybe we can try to find a way to reconnect.
Zoë Schiffer: We can. We can.
Leah Feiger: No, of course not. Good, good. This issue is one that we have been thinking about, covering, looking at for a long time, but it is all about a DOGE whistleblower who just sued Elon Musk. It all started last year. On April 14, 2025, Dan Berulis, an IT employee at the National Labor Relations Board, NLRB, filed his complaint with the main issue. He said DOGE had tampered with the agency’s information and appeared to be releasing it from the NLRB.
Previous audio: A whistleblower is coming forward with allegations that DOGE not only obtained information from his agency, but also took confidential information with it. According to the information provided by Congress, “Approximately 10 gigabytes of data, equivalent to a stack of encyclopedias are needed if one were to publish these files as hard documents.”
Leah Feiger: That was a big statement, especially when you guys remember it so well, DOGE teams were chasing government officials and getting classified information all over the country. We were at the peak of last year in April. Berulis made the announcement publicly in an NPR interview. His name was linked there and he said a threatening note had been taped to his door and he was too scared to speak. Moving on a bit further, Berulis has now filed a defamation lawsuit in DC court against Elon Musk. He also said that Musk made him a target for further violence by falsely claiming that Berulis’ claims against DOGE were false. This is very difficult for a variety of reasons and what all this has to do with Musk in the last year is sharing a broadcast from a right-wing activist who says that DOGE has been removed and that the testimony of this whistleblower was false. After that –
