Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights regarding the disciplinary sanctions he received during the coaching period of Fenerbahce.
These penalties date back to November 2024, when the Turkish Federation fined him 600,000 lira, in addition to a one-game suspension and ban from the locker room and bench.
These fines came after the Turkish FA deemed him to have shown unsportsmanlike conduct towards opposition fans during one of the matches, as well as subsequent statements by the coach in which he criticized the level of refereeing.
The Independent newspaper reports that Mourinho claimed in his appeal that his right to a fair trial had been breached, saying that the Turkish FA’s disciplinary and appeals committees lacked independence and that he had not received a clearly reasoned decision.
He also adds that these sanctions violate his right to freedom of expression, as they punish him for expressing his opinion on the arbitration, which prompted the European Court of Human Rights to ask the Turkish authorities to clarify the issue of the independence of the commissions and the extent of the balance between this and freedom of expression.
