McCabe was speaking from the Republic of Ireland camp as Carla Ward’s side prepared for their final two World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and France.
The Irish captain added that he was relieved his future was decided before he arrived in camp because he could “focus on the games”, both of which must be won if his side are to secure automatic qualification for next year’s tournament in Brazil.
“It was no secret that I was coming into the last year of my contract so naturally there were conversations from January, and everything has been sorted out over the last few weeks and months,” added McCabe.
The Dublin native reflected fondly on his time at Arsenal, who he joined from Raheny United in 2015, and also spoke of his excitement over a move to Chelsea, who are aiming to reclaim the WSL title from Manchester City next season.
“To spend 10-11 years at a football club is really special and to do it at a football club like Arsenal was amazing.
“Growing up there, learning a lot as a player and as a person, I have a lot of respect for everyone there and for my teammates.
“The past few months have been difficult for me, but now is the right time for a new chapter in my career.
“Talking to Sonia (Bompaster), I understood what she wanted and the project she was trying to build at Chelsea and I wanted to be a part of that.”
