England defender Lucy Bronze says the Women’s Super League has the “edge” to improve every year so is able to attract Europe’s best players.
A number of high-profile players from Spain – England’s opponents on Friday – have been linked with moves to the WSL this summer.
BBC Sport has given the news On Monday a verbal agreement was reached with Mappi Lyon, who left Barcelona last month after nine years there, to join the London City Lionesses.
Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas is also leaving Barcelona after 14 years and it is understood that The London City lionesses are in pursuit.
It follows the moves of Mariona Caldenti’s Arsenal and Lucia Corrales and Jana Fernandez’s London City Lionesses in recent years.
“There are a lot of players (on the move) in Europe but I think it’s been more recent with the Spanish players,” Bronze said.
“The WSL is arguably one of the biggest leagues in the world and one of the most commercialised. The draw of the game is huge for big clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal etc.
“Being a part of the competition in the WSL is incredible. The best players in the world want to compete for trophies all the time.
“The English league has that edge now where we’re going to another level every season and that has a lot to do with the success of the Lionesses. I think it could be a really exciting league to be part of.”
Spain face England in Friday’s Women’s World Cup qualifier in Mallorca (20:00 BST).
They conclude their qualification campaign against Ukraine at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Tuesday (20:00 BST).
Sarina Wiegmann’s side have won all four of their qualifying matches so far and have a three-point lead over Spain in the table.
“Spain, for us, is an amazing opponent. They bring out the best in us,” added Bronze.
“It’s one of those rivalries where we make each other better. It’s good for the game and good for each other.
“The way Spain have improved over the last four or five years has really pushed the England team to improve. That filters down to the rest of Europe.
“It’s a really good, fun rivalry that both teams absolutely love.”
