Erling Haaland: Man City Real Madrid presidential candidate threatens legal action over promise to sign striker | football news

Man City are considering legal action over Real Madrid’s presidential bid to sign Erling Haaland if elected.

What actually happened?

Real presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme, who faces incumbent Florentino Perez in Sunday’s vote, claimed on a Spanish TV show The Anthill On Wednesday night Haaland had a release clause and wanted to move to the Bernabeu. He also held a Real shirt with ‘Haaland 9’ on the back.

Riquelme, who also promised to sign Haaland’s City team-mate Rodri, said: “If I break my promise on one of these players, I have signed a guarantee where I will pay 100 per cent of the membership fee for next season.

“Haaland has a release clause and wants to come to Madrid.”

What was the city’s response?

However, Manchester City have moved quickly to refute the claims, saying in a statement that there is “no chance” Haaland will leave the Etihad Stadium anytime soon. The Premier League club also said they were considering legal action over the shirt stunt.

A City spokesman said in a statement: “The stories coming out of Spain about Erling Haaland’s future are untrue.

“There is no possibility of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it.

“We are considering legal action for the use of our player’s image in this context.”

Haaland is under contract at the Etihad until the summer of 2034 and Haaland’s agent Rafaela Pimenta and his father Alfie Haaland have scoffed at suggestions the 25-year-old could soon be moving to the Spanish capital.

A joint statement released on Thursday morning said: “All very funny but not true. We wish both candidates the best of luck in the Real Madrid election.”

Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on the news that Jose Mourinho is set to return to Real Madrid.

The video was posted in response to Riquelme’s TV appearance promoting his rival bid.

Perez has made no secret of his desire to name Mourinho as head coach if he wins the vote and retains the role for an eighth term, but his social media post appears to have made it official.

Mourinho is expected to agree a three-year deal to return to the Bernabeu stadium and replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed in January following the departure of Xabi Alonso.

Benfica are yet to confirm Mourinho’s exit, while speculation is rife that Marco Silva is being lined up as his successor after the Portuguese announced he will leave Fulham when his contract expires in June.

Club members will decide on the election of the president of Real Madrid on Sunday. It is the first contested election since 2006 as club members will choose between incumbent Perez, 79, and businessman Riquelme, 37.
