A family’s hard journey to fame
The world of football remains witness to stories and conflicts that go beyond the green rectangle to touch the thread of identity, belonging and loyalty to the roots.
In Dreams Between Two Sciences, a unique story emerges that doesn’t put any player in a dilemma of choice, but rather splits one house and one family in two, with the older brother wearing the shirt of his fathers and grandfathers’ homeland, while the younger brother chooses to follow brother William and Neil, the brilliant story of the world. From the hell of the desert to the lights of La Liga
The story begins with the Williams family as they fight a different kind of struggle for survival. In the 1990s, father Felix and mother Maria packed their belongings to escape the harsh conditions of Ghana, crossing the Sahara desert on foot amid the horrors of death and starvation, and the journey continued to Spain’s Basque Country.
In these difficult circumstances, Inyaki (1994) and then Niko (2002) were born, embarking on an amazing journey of ascent that began with extreme poverty and a promise that Inyaki made to his weeping mother that one day: “I will become a professional player and end this suffering.”
Inyaki.. Responding to the call of the roots
Ignacy Williams has been a symbol of Athletic Bilbao for years and made 17 appearances for Spain’s under-21 team before making his only senior appearance for Spain in a friendly against Bosnia in May 2016.
He was left waiting for a real opportunity with La Roja for years after that, but with time and a succession of major tournaments without an official call-up, the Ghana Football Association came knocking hard on his door ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Here the decision was not purely mathematical, but rather emotional and human. The pope played a key role when he asked Ignachi to wear the Black Stars shirt before he died.
Inyaki responded to the call for blood and chose to fulfill his family’s wish and restore ties with his homeland of Ghana, officially announce his change of international allegiance, play 26 games for the Black Stars and travel to the 2026 World Cup, flying the flag of a country he did not live in but ran through his veins.
Nico… walks the path of the matador
On the other side of the conflict, younger brother Neko Williams was going through a completely different turn.
Nico was born at the turn of the millennium and rose through the ranks of the Spanish national team. When his star emerged as one of La Liga’s fastest and most dangerous wingers, Spain were quick to secure his talent and call him up.
Nico saw that his future and football dream lay under the Matador banner and ignored the emotional temptations of his older brother and chose to represent Spain, quickly transforming from a promising talent into a national hero who was instrumental in leading La Roja to the podium, carving his name in golden letters.
Neko Williams has made 30 appearances so far and has been instrumental in winning Euro 2024. He will also participate in… World Cup 2026.
One home… and two flags at the World Cup
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar saw the dramatic climax of this story, with the two brothers entering the tournament under two different flags, in a rare sight reminiscent of what previously happened with the Boateng brothers (Jerome and Kevin Prince) against Germany and Ghana.
Mother Maria experienced mixed emotions, filled with pride and fear, as she saw one son fighting for the colors of Spain and the other defending the flag of Ghana.
It will be repeated at the 2026 World Cup, when Neko Williams will play for Spain and Ignacy Williams for Ghana.
