Protesters threatened more unrest during the tournament
Mexico is suffering complete chaos just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup, which it co-hosts with America and Canada.
Mexico went through months of chaos before things calmed down in the past few weeks, but the crisis has returned.
The Sun newspaper reported on Wednesday that Mexico was plunged into fresh chaos after striking teachers stripped giant effigies of soccer players from their clothes, set them on fire and left them in the burning streets.
In shocking scenes, protesters targeted an advertising exhibition celebrating the FIFA World Cup just days before the opening match of the 2026 tournament in Mexico City.
The display, held along one of the capital’s main streets, included giant statues of players in national team jerseys as part of the event to energize fans.
But angry members of the CNTE teachers’ union stormed the area, toppling the 16-foot statues, removing their clothes and setting them on fire, while burning soccer balls and blocking the city’s main roads.
The union, which has sparked protests in recent weeks, says it is fighting to raise wages and delay pension reforms.
