The story of Algeria and the World Cup… the mission to restore prestige begins now

A new revolution awaits the fighters

In football, there are teams that play to win and there are teams that play to tell their story. Algeria is of the second type. After the first goal against Germany in 1982, the Algerians saw the World Cup not just as a tournament, but as a mirror of their dignity. They are happy with the victory, they are angry for the injustice, they cry for the lost goal at the last second.

The story was not easy. Between Gijon’s betrayal and the Porto Alegre saga and Blida’s tears, this team had all the emotions before Cameroon. It was absent for 24 years and then returned. It flashed, then broke and waited another 12 years to come back.

Today, after qualifying for 2026, a new chapter opens. The generation of Mahrez and Gomor not only wears a green shirt, but also carries the memory of an entire nation. This is the story of Algeria in the World Cup… a story that is not over yet.

The legendary beginning.. 1982 and the betrayal of Gijon

In 1982, Algeria participated in the World Cup held in Spain for the first time, because at that time no one expected anything from an African team, but the golden generation led by Rabah Majer and Lakhdar Belloumi surprised everyone. In the first match, “Desert Warriors” won 2-1 against European champion West Germany. It was a historic victory that made the whole world talk about the Arab team.

After a great victory, Algeria lost to Austria with a score of 0-2, then came back and beat Chile with a score of 3-2. With these results, Algeria collected four points and was waiting for the result of the last match between Germany and Austria. The match ended 1–0 after an unannounced compromise between the two teams, and was the only result that would have eliminated Algeria and both qualified.

Algerians felt unjust and called what happened the “Gijón Conspiracy”. Despite an early exit, Algeria gained a lot of respect. Then FIFA changed the law and started to hold the matches of the final round at the same time, so that what happened would not happen again.

A group of death and an attempt to confirm after 4 years

Four years later, Algeria again got the right to participate in the 1986 World Cup held in Mexico. This time it was not a surprise. Rather, the team needed to prove that 1982 was no fluke as the draw placed them in a very difficult group with Brazil, Spain and Northern Ireland.

It opened with a 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland, with a fine goal from Jamal Zidane, before Algeria lost 1-0 to Brazil despite a strong defensive display, then lost 3-0 to Spain. The results were not enough to qualify, but the game against Brazil in particular left a good impression.

The 1986 outing was different from 1982 as Algeria were no longer considered an obscure team but rather became a household name in Africa. This participation closed the first generation stage, and after that began a long absence from the World Championship.

A comeback achievement…and writing new history in Brazil

From 1986 to 2010, Algeria was completely absent from the World Cup. Many generations tried and failed, but a comeback finally came in South Africa in 2010 after a famous play-off against Egypt in Omdurman. The generation was led by Antar Yahya, Karim Ziani and Majid Bughera.

In 2010, Algeria did not score a single goal, but played a historic 0-0 draw against England. It was a draw that had a taste of victory and brought confidence back to the team after a long absence. Despite being eliminated from the first round, the return was an achievement in itself.

The real story was written in 2014 in Brazil. Algeria played attacking football and beat South Korea 4-2 to advance to the round of 16 for the first time. There he faced Germany and had one of his best games, losing only 2-1 after extra time. This generation, under the leadership of Islam Slimani, Sofiane Feghuli and Riyad Mahrez, placed Algeria among the greats.

12 years of absence…the pain of 2018 and 2022

After the achievement in 2014, everyone expected Algeria to easily go on to the World Cup, but the opposite happened. Underperformed in the 2018 Russia qualifiers and the team finished bottom of their group. It was an unexpected fall for a generation at its peak.

The biggest pain came in the 2022 qualifiers, where Algeria beat Cameroon 1-0 in Douala and were seconds away from qualifying for Qatar… But at the Mustafa Çaker Stadium in Blida, Cameroon scored a fatal goal in the 124th minute. The loss was a shock to the players and spectators.

This goal was missed by Algeria for the second time in a row, bringing the absence to a full 12 years. Mahrez’s generation that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations did not play in a single World Cup and that left a deep wound, so qualifying for the 2026 World Cup became a national dream.

New story…2026 World Cup in America

The dream came true on October 9, 2025. Algeria beat Somalia 3:0 in the 9th round of qualification. Ammoura scored two goals and Mahrez scored one. With this victory, it officially guaranteed a place in the 2026 World Cup, making it the fifth participation in its history after 1982, 1986, 2010 and 2014 and a 12-year absence.

The qualification came with Algeria topping their group, becoming the 20th team to retain their place in the tournament and the fifth Arab team after Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Qatar. The current generation combines experience and youth, from Mahrez and Ben Sabaeen to Amura, Ouar, Juiri and Ait Nouri.

The new journey will start from America. Algeria will meet the world champion Argentina on June 17 in Kansas City, then on June 23 they will play Jordan in Santa Clara. The Algerian public does not just want to participate, but rather to see their national team write a new chapter, perhaps a more beautiful one than the 2014 saga.
