World number one Aryna Sabalenka saw her French Open title hopes dashed after a comprehensive quarter-final defeat by Diana Schneider in another shock result at this year’s tournament.
Sabalenka, a finalist at last year’s Roland Garros, was 6-3 4-1 before the momentum suddenly changed and sparked an extraordinary comeback from Schneider.
The Russian, the 25th seed, who was playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, won 12 of her last 13 games to win 3-6 7-5 6-0.
Sabalenka was the only remaining Grand Slam singles champion in the women’s open draw and was a heavy favorite for the title.
Her defeat means Russian eighth seed Mira Andreeva is the top seed left in the women’s draw.
The breezy conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier played havoc with Sabalenka’s powerful hitting, and the Belarusian committed 57 unforced errors.
Her performance slowed down, throwing her arms up, letting out a gut-wrenching scream and venting her frustration as she unleashed her fury on her team.
It was reminiscent of her. Last year’s final defeatSabalenka tallied a whopping 70 unforced errors and let a set lead slip away on Coco Gauff.
“Honestly, I’m speechless,” Schneider said in an interview after the game.
“She is world number one, so I was trying to do my best. I had to fight for every point.”
Schneider will meet Maja Chwalinska in the semi-finals after the Pole’s Anna Kalinskaia won earlier on Wednesday.
