PThe future of the LayStation has seemed a little uncertain over the past few years. Although the PS5 has sold well and been very profitable, the brand is far from the runaway market leader it was in the days of the PS2. Earlier this week, Game File he dug Sony’s latest reports to show how PlayStation has been selling its limited edition games since the outbreak. About 54.1m copies of games produced or published by Sony were sold in the 2018 financial year; in 2025, it sold 32.1m.
Sony has released some great home games since the PS5 was released in 2020, from Astro Bot to The spirit of Yoteibut he has also had costs and public failures and obstacles; PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, who is set to retire in 2024, placed a big bet on gaming and few panned out (hello, Helldivers). Sony seems to have returned to releasing its PS5 games on PC after a while, showing that it wants to maintain its advantage and uniqueness.
Meanwhile, its old rival Xbox may have faded into the background as a sales competitor – the PS5 has outsold the Xbox Series S/X by almost three to one – but it has become a strong publisher competitor, having bought dozens of development studios besides Activision and Bethesda. Then there’s Nintendo, whose exclusive Switch and Switch 2 games have fared better than Sony’s over the past decade. (The best-selling PS4 game by Sony was Spider-Man, at 22.68m. The best-selling Switch game by Nintendo was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at … 71m.)
So what will Sony do in the next few years, as we enter the next phase of the PS5’s life? Does it play safe, or diversify? Maybe revive some nostalgic millennial games? Thanks to yesterday’s State of Play live-stream, we have some answers. Here’s what’s on the slate:
Marvel’s Wolverine | 15 September 2026
The California-based Insomniac’s next Marvel adventure after the great adventure of Spider-Man and Wolverine’s violent action game. Seriously, we see the claws go through about seven people in the first 30 seconds showBefore his fellow mutant Jean Gray arrives and starts killing people with telekinesis instead. A motorcycle race follows, and there is a race for a moving car. Really all the Hollywood-esque realism an actor could want, as well as a bit more blood-letting than others would do. There were also less than 18 Marvel events in the form of comic book fighting games Marvel Tokon: Battle for Souls (coming 6th August).
Silent Hill: Townfall | 24 September 2026
This Silent Hill has come up, from Scottish developer Screen Burn, appearance very good. It’s a horror game that takes place in a town on the east coast of Scotland. Expect: lots of nasty creatures that come from the depths of the characters’ worst thoughts. Many of the small beach houses were left in dire straits. A haunting shot of closed doors at the end of the streets. And very dangerous radio static.
Onimusha: Path of the Sword | 25 September 2026
Capcom is reviving its classic PlayStation series in a Japanese fantasy game, in which you cut down demons and katana. (It will have to work hard to compete with FromSoftware’s Nioh and Sekiro games, which have filled this niche in the twenty years since Onimusha left.) show is available try it now.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis | 12 February 2027
Although this was announced at the end of last yearwe just saw it for the first time. It’s a remake of the first Tomb Raider, and it really means it – it looks like a classic game. It has all the classics: Egyptian tombs, jungle temples, T-Rexes, and Lara Croft looking badass in her modern clothes.
The Lost Wild | 2027
For a while I thought this was a revival of Dino Crisis, but no: it’s a first-person game where you seem to spend most of your time. run or hide dinosaursshivering under things like horrors haunting you in the mist.
Until Dawn 2 | 2027
The sequel is one of the most beloved horror games of all time, where a group of young witch hunters get stuck on an abandoned island while filming a movie. Your choices determine who is alive or dead.
God of War: Laufey | TB
This was a big announcement, which was saved until the end of last night’s stream, from the Santa Monica Studio. We open as God of War’s protagonist Kratos ritually burns the wrapped body of his wife Laufey, also known as Faye, one of the last Norse giants, their son Atreus looks on. He also becomes a star and enters the afterlife – and in the end we not only meet him, but play as him. They fight flower-type zombies that gave me Last of Us clicker flashbacks, along with something that looks like a cross between an axolotl and a bulldog, before being dragged off to an underground prison of the dead gods.
Laufey can do anything Kratos can do, including punching giant legendary demons and squeezing himself into tight spaces while the next level fills up. The presentation of this series is unmatched. (Also, they fight alongside a gelatinous talking cube called Phranque.) Check it out A 20-minute teaser during lunch break, they are important. I have been waiting for a long time for a blockbuster game where you play as a very angry mother.
Best of all
I know many devotees of anti-aircraft war melodrama Ace Combat; at the same time it devotes itself too much to its slowness, and is quite unnecessary. The next episode will be released on October 2. Stuntman: Hollywood perhaps the most unexpected comeback of the year so far, a high-speed, high-speed action game that used the theme of Knight Rider and the DeLorean. Before that, September brings the so-called sequel Control: Clarity from the beloved Finnish developer Remedy, creators of crazy fun games. In October, the harmless (and armless) French hero Rayman returns in a four-game adventure called The Legend of Rayman Retold. Chef Bancho is the beginning of the beloved sushi restaurant/arcade diving simulator Dave the Diver, following one man’s journey to master sushi. A dangerous game Sick (expected in 2027) It’s still the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen on a game show. In a Japanese-made game Chemuri (coming in 2027) you are a magical hunter reborn forever, using their experiences against them; promises “chaos and laughter with friends”.

Toys
Nintendo has released a very silly game for the smartphone called Pictonicin which you play 10-second WarioWare mini-games using graphics on your device. The game uses faces that you just draw, so you can remove crabs from your friend’s face, or chase your baby-faced friend out of the window with a lollipop, or brush your cute hair.
It’s funny, silly and a little dirty. If you don’t want to give the game access to all of your cameras, it’s easy to change the photos it chooses. (No one wants to suddenly find themselves playing a parachute mini game with the smiling face of their recent ex.)
