WWhen Ellie (Jessica Rothe) wakes up in a bed she doesn’t recognize, next to a man she doesn’t know, she naturally assumes the worst, in director BT Meza’s creepy thriller. He is understandably angry, and is very upset when the little girl who calls him his mother shows up, worried that Ellie doesn’t know her anymore. Have you been kidnapped? Why would this girl agree with the thief’s lies? Meanwhile, Bruce (an excellent performance from Joseph Cross) intervenes, reassuring his daughter and explaining to Ellie that she is losing her memory. He is her husband, she says, and Alice (Julianna Layne) is their little girl.
If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know there are twists and turns. This short film keeps you thinking and when it finally shows its hand, there is still a lot of distance left in the characters. Layne gives a brilliant performance as Alice; At first it’s hard to tell if he’s an innocent victim of a tragedy or in some other way what’s going on – and that’s what this guy needs. It’s a movie that wants to tease the audience about what kind of people we’re watching, it’s nice to see a kid being played in the unknown.
Love is a great show for the great director, playing successfully with the idea that people who are capable of doing bad things often don’t believe that they are doing wrong. As it is now, everyone is involved in doing what they think is right. This gives one player a chance to see a character who does a lot of damage while believing themselves to be a righteous defender. You may and may not agree with their decisions, but you cannot fault their intentions.
