The president of “Real” confirms that the club is not for sale and explains the idea behind his project
Real Madrid president and candidate for a new term Florentino Perez has responded to allegations that his election rival Enrique Riquelme intends to privatize or sell the club, stressing that his future project aims to protect and increase member ownership, not give it up.
Riquelme complained that the club’s official channels were being used in a way that served Florentino Perez’s election campaign. He said in a conversation with the media “What worries me is that all the club’s funds are being used for personal campaigning, while there are no offers from the other side. Well, one offer is to sell the club. The members received only the electoral envelope of candidate Peres.”
In a video published by his election campaign on social networks, Perez emphasized that “Real” will remain the property of its members, saying:
The president of the Royal Club explained that his plan includes the possibility of creating a company wholly owned by Real Madrid, through which it will manage the football and basketball activities, while maintaining full control of the members of the club and its facilities.
He added: “Real Madrid will continue to have its president, board of directors and general assembly as it is now. All important decisions will remain in the hands of the club structures, and nothing will change in this regard.”
Peres noted that the project could allow the entry of an investor with a stake not exceeding 5% in the future in order to assess the club’s market value, stressing that this investor would not have any administrative powers or decision-making rights.
“This is not privatization, quite the opposite. We want to give members economic ownership of the club in addition to their moral ownership,” he said.
Perez has warned of the risks to the current ownership model if irresponsible management takes over the club in the future.
He explained. “An administration can come in and run up debts and push the club into bankruptcy, then some person or organization takes it over for a token amount, as has happened with other clubs. I don’t want that to happen to Real Madrid.
He added that the danger could also come from within the club, explaining that any administration could overinflate the number of members, which could lead to current members losing their influence and control over the institution.
Perez concluded his speech by emphasizing that his project aims to economically link members to the club for future generations.
“Today we own Real Madrid emotionally and symbolically, but we have no economic value in it. I want the members to become real owners of the club’s value, and their children and grandchildren to be able to inherit that ownership in the future.”
