The UK winter could be hotter than normal with more heatwaves forecast.

The UK could see a warmer than average summer, according to the latest forecasts.

The Met Office issued its three-month summer outlook on June 1 – the first day of meteorological summer – citing warmer than normal weather throughout the month.

And for the rest of the summer – until the end of August – the outlook suggests an “increasing likelihood of heat waves and heat-related impacts”.

It comes after a late autumn heat wave in the UK broke temperature records.

A new all-time May record of 35.1C was set at Kew Gardens in London, replacing the previous record of 32.8C set in 1944.

Yellow and amber heat health warnings have also been issued for the first time this year.

Now, long-range forecasts from the Met Office and MeteoGroup – the latter of which is the BBC’s weather data provider – suggest that the coming summer will bring more heatwave risks.

According to the MeteoGroup, “a few notable high temperatures” are possible.

They also say that “above average temperatures” are expected in each of June, July and August, with “severe bursts” expected across the UK and across Europe.

But the higher-than-average temperature forecast comes with twice as many warm summers compared to the 1991-2020 average.
