The Google Phone app will tell you if a hacker is impersonating one of your contacts

Google is is introducing a new feature for its Phone app which is intended to protect you from AI fraud. Now, when you receive a call from a caller that appears to be from the same number as one of your contacts, Google Phone will mark the call as suspicious so you can block it.

In a post explaining the changes to the Phone app, Google describes phishing as a growing threat, and FBI report that Americans they lost $893 million to carry out fraud using AI in 2025. To carry out this attack, criminals take the phone number of your contacts and then use AI skills to make their voice sound like that of a friend, family member, or boss. The Google Phone app will display a notification when you receive one of these fake calls, saying “Someone thinks they’re calling you from your contact number,” and an option to stop it.

Google is turning this feature on by default for users of Android 12 and later, starting with Pixel phones. This works if you and a trusted person use Google Phone, as the connected device sends an “authentication signal” that verifies that the call is from a friend or family member. If a hacker tries to hack your contact number, “the original code will disappear,” according to Google. The company says it built this technology on end-to-end encrypted rich communication services (RCS), allowing other apps to emulate it.
