Microsoft announced last year that it had developed a A major breakthrough in quantum computing and Majorana 1, the company’s first quantum processor. Majorana 2 contains qubits, a unit of information in quantum computing similar to the bits used in computers today, which are 1,000 times more reliable, according to Microsoft. It is the most important factor that helps make quantum computing reliable, thanks to the use of a new stack and support from Microsoft Discovery’s agetic AI.

The improved hardware means better performance for the qubits, according to Microsoft. “In aluminum from Majorana 1, the lifetime of a qubit was between one and 12 milliseconds, while in Majorana 2, the lifetime exceeds 20 seconds, representing an improvement of more than 1,000x,” says Nayak. Some qubit lifetimes now exceed one minute, enough to convince Microsoft that it has advanced enough to promise the technology it needs in the near future.
“Based on these rapid advances, we are accelerating our path to a scalable, efficient computer,” says Nayak. “We have cut our timeline in half and want to achieve this goal by 2029.” Microsoft is working to develop a fault-tolerant computer based on topological qubits, with the goal of quantum computing to solve some of the world’s most difficult problems.
Microsoft is now releasing Discovery, the platform that helped develop Majorana chips, to its customers today. Microsoft Discovery is designed to facilitate the use of workflows in research and development.
