As a pet tech writer here on the comments team at WIRED, I have a lot of ideas automatic litter box you have to find. I have tried about 20 brands, but I always go back to one of the first models my cats ever used, Litter-Robot 4. Of all the brands I’ve tried, Whisker’s connected mobile app is the best player. Litter-Robot 5 Pro
This is the Litter-Robot model to choose if you are a helicopter parent like me, have concerns about your pet’s health, or just want to get the best model on the market. It has dual AI-powered cameras that record events outside and inside the litter box. New AI technology can recognize up to five cats to know who has used the litter box and when, and WasteID technology to determine the type of trip your cat has taken based on its weight—Litter-Robot is the only brand on the market with this capability. If you decide to go with this model and have multiple cats, I recommend you start Whisk + a paid subscription plan ($80/year) to unlock this feature and enable the machine to continuously differentiate between them.
The attached app also has charts over time to help you better understand your cat’s health and habits, so you know if something is wrong (an important tool for keeping your cat healthy). Using WasteID technology, the 5 Pro automatically adjusts odor control based on the type of waste, cycling instantly to destroy solid waste and waiting longer when you urinate to ensure it works properly. The cabinet is also more tightly sealed and larger than previous Litter-Robot models, with up to 10 days of litter storage per cat so you can empty more often.
Along with the new built-in camera, the LR 5 Pro uses a modern screen instead of physical buttons for manual control; a larger, deeper recorder than previous models; with a long beak, removed from the entrance. With AI-powered detection to monitor multiple cats, a camera to monitor their activity, and WasteID technology to recognize types of visits and adjust cleaning, the 5 Pro is a valuable tool for monitoring pet health from your phone.
Good For Most People (and Cats)
The Litter-Robot 5 is the latest iteration of my favorite Litter-Robot 4now with WasteID to identify types of waste by weight (if you have a Whisker + registration), easy collection and removal of waste, and a new LCD control panel instead of buttons. Instead of using an AI-connected camera like the 5 Pro model above (because it doesn’t have one), this system selects which cat is using the box using a built-in scale. The version 5 works for up to five cats and can store litter for 10 days for one cat, and the connected app provides information on the cat’s behavior and weight changes.
